Wealth Redistribution
coi is based in Los Angeles/San Gabriel Valley and occupies the land of the Gabrieleno/Tongva peoples. As a guest on Tongva land, we make kuuyam nahwá'a (a recurring guest exchange) to the Tongva Taraxat Paxaavxa Conservancy, a Tongva-led organization rematriating the land to California native plants and Tongva people.
We currently make a monthly kuuyam nahwá’a of $30 to support critical Indigenous efforts to return land back to its original caretakers. We hope to increase our monthly contribution as coi grows, and invite you to join us by making an institutional and/or personal kuuyam nahwá'a.
On a monthly basis, we will also donate 10% of every purchase to support grassroots organizing efforts with low-income and working class folks in the Los Angeles area. We hope to also increase this amount as we grow in an effort to redistribute our profits. On the cart page, you can choose which efforts you’d like the donation to go towards:
- Chinatown Community for Equitable Development: CCED is an intergenerational all-volunteer organization based in LA Chinatown, an extremely low-income immigrant and multiracial/ethnic neighborhood fighting erasure from gentrification, displacement, and predatory real estate speculation. CCED organizes for tenant power, economic justice, and community stewardship of land and permanent affordable housing.
- Garment Worker Center: GWC is a nonprofit organization led by LA garment worker-members organizing against sweatshop labor in the fashion industry—and for improved workplace conditions, fair wages, strong labor laws, and industry accountability.
- J-TOWN Action と Solidarity: JAとS is a grassroots collective building community power in Little Tokyo and organizing against inequitable development and criminalization of homelessness. JAとS organizes with local unhoused residents, providing mutual aid resources at their POWER UP! distributions every Saturday.
